Ghosts from the past. op 12 juni 1963 kort na middernacht doodde een kogel de burgerrechtenactivist medgar evers, de eerste secretaris van de nationale vereniging ter bevordering van kleurlingen (nmcp) in de staat mississippi. de dader was de racist byron de la beckwith (james woods) die vrijgelaten werd na twee processen in 1963 waarbij de jury niet tot eenstemmigheid kon komen. nagenoeg 31 jaar zouden voorbijgaan voor medgar evers gerechtigheid gedaan werd. dankzij het doorzettingsvermogen en het geloof van zijn vrouw myrlie (whoopi goldberg) en de moed en inzet van de jonge officier van justitie bobby delaughter (alec baldwin) werd het onderzoek opnieuw geopend en na al die jaren werd byron de la beckwith dan toch gedwongen om voor zijn misdaad te boeten. het betekende meteen ook voor mississippi en de hele wereld een stap op weg naar rassengelijkheid. alec baldwin, whoopi goldberg, james woods, craig t. nelson, susanna thompson, william h. macy, rob reiner
